Rehabilitation Services

At Altoona Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, our therapy team can provide services for both long-term residents and short-term rehab to home. We can perform a home evaluation prior to discharge to ensure all goals have been attained for the safest return home.

  • Physical, Occupational and Speech Therapy
    • Physical: Physical therapists work to restore mobility and promote independence. The goal is to move the patient toward greater independence and mobility, either unassisted or with assist devices. The licensed physical therapists focus on improvement, coordination, balance, strength, and endurance.
    • Occupational: Occupational therapists use goal-directed activity to help restore, maintain and improve daily living skills. The goal is to assess personal self-care and daily living skills and to provide modified techniques and/or adaptive devices, as necessary, to assist patients in achieving the skills needed in activities of daily living.
    • Speech: Speech-language pathologists focus on improvements in swallowing, hearing, speech, and language proficiency. The goal is to assess and provide treatment for individuals with disorders of speech, language, swallowing, communication and/or feeding programs to help the patient recover lost skills or develop new ones.
  • ACP Modalities including Electrical Stimulation. These “physical agent modalities” have been used successfully for many years to decrease pain, inflammation, and edema associated with a broad range of prevalent conditions. This proven medical technology also enables therapists to treat more complex conditions, decrease muscle disuse atrophy, enhance soft tissue healing through increased circulation, and improve neuromuscular control in patients with orthopedic and neurological diagnoses.
  • Omnicycle, which is similar to an ordinary exercise cycle, but can be powered by the arms or legs. It also has a special motorized system that senses the amount of help needed to exercise. This allows those with physical limitations to participate in therapeutic exercise activities sooner after illness or injury.

Respite Care

You and your loved one need time for some rest and relaxation.

Altoona Nursing & Rehabilitation Center provides caregiver relief with our Restore and Rejuvenate program for your loved one, so you can take care of yourself.

Respite Benefits for Caregivers:

  • A chance to spend time with other friends and family, or to just relax
  • Time to take care of errands such as shopping, exercising, getting a haircut or going to the doctor
  • Comfort and peace of mind knowing that your loved one is spending time with another caring individual

Respite Benefits for the Resident:

  • Receive quality care when the primary caregiver is away
  • Interact with others having similar experiences
  • Spend time in a safe, supportive environment
  • Participate in activities designed to match personal abilities and needs

Tips for planning Respite Care

  1. Involve your loved one. When planning for time off from your caregiving duties, make sure to keep your loved one is in the loop. Get their input on deciding how much time you will be away and who will fill in for you when you’re gone. Make sure to tell them that they will benefit from you being more relaxed and refreshed. Assure them that they will also reap rewards from socializing with other people.
  2. Assess your needs. Make a list of what care will be needed in your absence. Also, decide if the respite care provider will need any special skills or training to be able to stay with your parent. If so, understand that your options for respite caregivers may be more limited.
  3. Stay organized. Use a calendar to assist you with helpers to keep track of appointments and send requests to friends and family. Don’t forget to include time for yourself and note it on the calendar.

You may believe that you should be able to “do it all.” Seeking help does not make you a failure. It’s important to remember that respite services benefit your loved one as well as yourself as the caregiver.
